HONOLULU — Gov. Linda Lingle has released $750,000 for the construction of an education center at the Nisei Veterans Memorial Center on Maui. This is the third building of a three-building complex that includes a preschool and an adult day care facility.

The education center will house Nisei veterans' archives from World War II, including books, oral histories, photographs and other documents. The center has also partnered with the state Department of Education and the Go for Broke Educational Foundation of California to host seminars for high school students.

"It is important that we continue to share in the pride that Nisei veterans have brought to the state and the nation by sharing their stories with future generations," Lingle said.

Total cost of the project is $1.3 million. In addition to state funds, the center has received $300,000 from Maui County and $250,000 in private donations. Construction is scheduled to begin in January 2008 and be completed in October 2008.
