Eric Gilliom ordered to jail on domestic abuse

The Maui News

WAILUKU — Maui entertainer Eric Gilliom was ordered to turn himself in at 10 a.m. today to complete a 48-hour jail term after pleading no contest to abusing his wife, The Maui News reported.

He entered the plea Wednesday to the single count stemming from a March 26 incident, court records show.

The 43-year-old Wailuku resident also was placed on one year's probation by 2nd Circuit Judge Richard Bissen.

He ordered no further domestic violence intervention classes, noting Gilliom last month completed a program that had been ordered in another court case.

In February, Gilliom was placed on one year's probation after pleading no contest to a reduced charge of third-degree assault of his wife, Karin Gilliom, who reported that he punched her in the eye while they were in a car in Lahaina on Halloween. He had originally been charged with abuse in that case. The prosecution dismissed another count of abuse for a separate incident.

A deputy prosecutor declined to discuss Gilliom's case, but the complaint against him alleges physical abuse of his wife on March 26 in Wailuku.

Under the law, a minimum 48-hour jail term is mandatory for abuse convictions. Gilliom was given credit for the time he spent jailed at the Wailuku Police Station before posting $1,000 bail the night of his arrest.

The singer, songwriter and actor performs with Willie K as the "Barefoot Natives."
