Two injured in fire on Big Island

Advertiser Staff

Two 17-year-old boys were injured early this morning in a fire at a vacant, two-story dwelling at the southwest corner of Kanoelehua and Puainako streets on the Big Island, authorities reported.

Both were taken to the Hilo Medical Center where one was treated for first- and second-degree burns to his hands and feet, and the other was treated for smoke inhalation.

Kawailani District 3 Hawai'i County Firefighters responded to the alarm and found the upper floor of the structure fully engulfed when they arrived at 1:02 a.m. The two teenagers were sleeping in right rear bedroom, where the fire started, according to firefighters. Fire investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the blaze. Firefighters searched the building but found no other occupants, investigators said.

The dwelling was a total loss, they said. Damaged was estimated at $120,000.
