Honolulu's Ching captures medalist honors at tourney

Honolulu's Alex Ching shot a 4-under par 67 on Thursday to tie for medalist honors with Oregon's Gaston de la Torre at the Boys Junior Americas Cup at Morgan Run Resort & Club in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.

Ching, playing for Team Hawai'i, and de la Torre (66) finished at 8-under 205 in the three-day tournament.

James Erkenbeck of San Diego shot a 68 and finished third at 206. Honolulu's Bradley Shigezawa was fourth after a 73—207.

Oregon (207) and Washington (205) tied for first in the team competition at 16-under 623. San Diego (208) and Northern California (211) were tied for third at 630, while Hawai'i was fifth after a 217—634.

Other Hawai'i team members were: T.J. Kua (tied for 57, 77—226) and Alika Bell (T59, 78—227).

Ching, a Punahou senior, also won last week's Optimist International Junior Golf Championship at Palm Beach, Fla.

KIM WINS TOURNEY

Former Hawai'i high school golf champion Chan Kim shot a 1-under-par 71 yesterday to win the TomatoBank Southern California Classic, an American Junior Golfers Association tournament at Beaumont, Calif.

Kim, who now lives in Arizona, finished at 8-under-par 208 for a two-stroke victory at Oak Valley Golf Club.

KOP LEADS ARMY

Brandan Kop shot a 4-under-par 68 yesterday for a 138 total to lead the championship flight of the Army Invitational at the Leilehua Golf Course.

Matthew Ma is two shots behind at 71-69—140.

William Enomoto leads the A flight 74-74—148; Stanley Tandal leads the B flight 79-79—158; Joe Zdyrski leads the C flight 86-82—168; and Russ McGarry leads the senior flight 74-71—145.

The final round begins at 6:39 a.m. today.

HPU SIGNS PLAYER

The Hawai'i Pacific University women's tennis team announced it has signed Nina Mihova for the 2008 season.

Mihova, the sister of current Sea Warrior player Tinka Mihova, is from Plovdiv, Bulgaria, where she was ranked in the top five nationally in junior tennis.

BILLFISH TOURNAMENT



EVENT OPENS MONDAY

The 48th annual Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament in Kona begins Monday and runs through Friday.

Anglers from around the world will be fishing from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Daily catches will be weighed at Kailua Pier.
