Lambert, Metzger win beach volleyball title

Punahou alums Mike Lambert and Stein Metzger defeated Brad Keenan and John Hyden, 21-19, 21-17, yesterday in Chicago to capture their fourth AVP Crocs tour title of the season.
While Keenan and Hyden kept pace nearly the entire match, Lambert and Metzger were able to refocus themselves with two well-timed timeouts in both games. Down 12-8 in the first, they started to climb back in the game with a timeout. And in the second, they pulled out of one of nine ties to ultimately take the lead.
Familiarity also played a role in this match, as Metzger and Lambert used to train with Keenan when he partnered with John Mayer in the offseason.
"We used to train together, and now he's too good," said Lambert of the 6-foot-8 Keenan. "No more tips for him."
That helped Lambert and Metzger figure out how to get to Hyden and Keenan, even though they trailed for much of the match.
"One of the things that really worked against (Keenan) was the short serve, but the last two times that hasn't really worked," Metzger said. "We tried everything against him and he really seemed to be on top of his game, and for the first time in a final that's pretty amazing.
"Luckily, we found his partner in a corner and were able to get a few points off him to save the day."
GOLF
KOP CAPTURES ARMY
Brandan Kop shot a 1-under-par 71 yesterday to capture the championship flight of the Army Invitational by two strokes at Leilehua Golf Course.
Kop finished the 54-hole event at 7-under 209.
Matthew Ma placed second at 71—211, followed by Derek Zellmer (68—215) and Jonathan Ota (73—216).
Keenan Lum beat Robert Nakagawa in a playoff to win A flight with 73—226; Alan Adachi beat Kin Lo in a playoff to win B flight with 76—239; Joe Zdyrski won C flight with 85—249; and Russ McGarry won the senior flight with 80—225.
SWIMMING
FUKUDA, MEISNER WIN
Dustin Fukuda was the overall male open winner and Rachael Meisner was the first female finisher of the North Shore Challenge yesterday.
Fukuda completed the 2.3-mile course from 'Ehukai Beach to Waimea Bay in 44 minutes, 22 seconds. Mitchell Chong was second in 46:29, followed by Gordon Shutt in 46:40.
Meisner finished the fourth and final event of the North Shore Swim Series in 48:35, followed by Shanelle Choi in 49:30 and Nicole Hagi in 49:46.
YOUTH BASEBALL
PEARL CITY GOES TO 3-0
Keanu Sato and Brennan Doane-Alcos teamed on a three-hitter as Pearl City defeated Cedar City, Utah, 5-0, yesterday in the Little League Junior (ages 13-14) Western Regional at Beaverton, Ore.
Sato also had two RBIs and Doane-Alcos two hits.
Chace Numata batted 3 for 5 for Pearl City (3-0), which plays Mesa, Ariz., today in its final game of pool play. Windward falls, 2-1
Spencer Troutman's two-out RBI double capped a two-run seventh inning that lifted Long Beach over Windward, 2-1, yesterday in the P.O.N.Y Pony (ages 13-14) West Zone Tournament at Fullerton, Calif.
Long Beach's rally was aided by two Windward errors.
Windward, which got six shutout innings from starter Alika Ramseyer-Ho, took a 1-0 lead in the top of the seventh on Jordan DePonte's RBI double.
Windward (0-1) plays in a loser's bracket game today.
YOUTH SOFTBALL
KUPONO FINISHES NINTH
California Cruisers surged to an 8-0 lead, then eliminated Kupono, 8-3, yesterday at the ASA Western A Nationals (ages 14-under) in Phoenix.
Rebecca Lee had two hits, and Angie Yoshizu, Kori Nishitomi and Gerika Pantohan each had an RBI for Kupono, which finished ninth in the 66-team field.
NO FEAR TAKES THREE
Fahren Glackin won two games and Shearyna Labasan as No Fear continued play yesterday at the ASA Western A Nationals (ages 10-under) in Beaverton, Ore.
Glackin pitched a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts in a 6-0 win over the Sherwood Fireballs, and a one-hitter with eight strikeouts in a 2-1 win over the Spokane Crash. Glackin had three hits and Shelbie Fujinaga three RBIs against Sherwood, and Glackin added two hits against Spokane.
Labasan pitched a one-hitter with five strikeouts in a 12-0 win over the Lady Sharks. Glackin had three hits and three RBIs and Labasan added two hits and three RBIs.
BOXING
10 FIGHTERS IN FINALS
Ten boxers from Hawai'i advanced to the finals of the Ringside World Championships in Kansas City, Mo.
The event is billed as the world's largest amateur boxing tournament with more than 12,000 participants. Advancing after four days of the single-elimination format were: Shayson Soares (70 pounds), Wai'anae; Jada Perreira (70), Wai'anae; Jonathan Benitez (95), Wai'anae; Mason Cornelio (100), Wai'anae; Alyssa Kane (114), Kapolei; Helena Delacruz-Lopes (119), Wai'anae; Arnold Berdon (132), Wai'anae; Boston Salmon (141), Wai'anae; Thomas Matias (132), Wai'anae and Noa Suiaunoa (200-plus), Wai'anae.

UH TICKETS GO ON SALE
Individual tickets for University of Hawai'i women's volleyball matches go on sale tomorrow.
Tickets are $19 for lower-level seats (single tickets only), $16 for upper-level adult tickets, $10 for upper-level senior citizen tickets and $6 for upper-level student tickets, ages 4-18.
UH student tickets are $6 for lower-level seats and $3 for upper-level seats.
