The Honolulu medical examiner's office identified the 56-year-old construction worker who died today after being struck by a van in 'Ewa as Maurice Kong of 'Ewa Beach.

The accident occurred on Fort Weaver Road, 97 feet north of Keaunui Drive, at 1:20 p.m. and speed appears to be a factor, police said.

A co-worker, 35, was taken to The Queen's Medical Center and is in critical condition, police vehicular homicide investigators said tonight.

The accident investigation closed two right, makai-bound lanes of Fort Weaver Road at Keaunui Drive until 4:13 p.m.

Kong's death is O'ahu's 42nd traffic fatality of the year, 13 of which have been pedestrians. Kong, however, is the first pedestrian fatality since June 4.

Ten of O'ahu's 13 pedestrian deaths occurred between January and March.

Police said a 1989 Chevy van driven by a 19-year-old 'Ewa Beach man veered right and drufted off Fort Weaver Road and struck the two workers.
