Mayor to sing at concert for Aloha Medical Mission

Advertiser Staff

The Aloha Medical Mission and HMSA are presenting a special benefit concert, "Four Doctors, A Patient &The Mayor!" at 7 p.m. on Saturday, August 18, at the Neal Blaisdell Concert Hall.

Organizers expect the concert to be sold out again this year. One draw: the addition of Honolulu's "singing mayor," Mufi Hannemann.

Doctors Jorge Camara, Timothy Lee, Reuben Guerrero, and Elizabeth Ignacio, all classical pianists, will perform.

The "patient" is Chris Cerna, a gifted pianist who is blind, and was helped by the Aloha Medical Mission.

Gary Sprinkle and Pamela Young, KITV's news anchors, will emcee.

This year marks the 24th anniversary of the Aloha Medical Mission, which provides free medical and dental services to the most needy in Hawaii, throughout Asia and the Pacific and beyond.

The organization's members recently provided medical relief in tsunami-ravaged Indonesia. Aloha Medical Mission has provided about $41 million in free health care over the years.

To date, Aloha Medical Mission has sent 92 medical missions to underserved communities in the Philippines, China, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Nepal, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, Indonesia, and the Big Island. All volunteers pay their own travel expenses.

Aloha Medical Mission volunteer professionals have treated over 202,000 patients, and more than 10,000 patients have received surgery without charge. Aloha Medical Mission also runs the only free public medical and dental clinic in Hawaii, on the grounds of Palama Settlement on Oahu.

This evening concert is presented by HMSA to celebrate Aloha Medical Mission's 24th anniversary; proceeds will help fund their program.

Tickets are $40, $60, $75, $100 and $250 and are available from Ticketmaster, 1-877-750-4400 or www.ticketmaster.com, Times Supermarkets, and the Blaisdell box office, 591-2211.

Donations can also be made to Aloha Medical Mission at 847-3400 or www.alohamedicalmission.org.
