Isle soldier is innocent, lawyer says

Associated Press

ATHENS, Ga. — The lawyer for a Hawai'i-based soldier accused of fatally shooting an Iraqi man says his client did not do anything wrong.

Spc. Christopher "Phillip" Shore of Winder, Ga., and Sgt. 1st Class Trey A. Corrales of San Antonio, have been charged with premeditated murder in the June 23 slaying of an unidentified man near the city of Kirkuk in northern Iraq.

The Army charge sheet document filed in the case says that Corrales shot the man several times with a rifle before ordering Shore to do the same. The Iraqi man died a few days later.

"Spc. Shore is one of four guys who turned in Corrales, and that's why he's so shocked that he got charged. And based on the evidence I've seen, my client didn't shoot the guy," said Shore's attorney, Michael Waddington.

Waddington will represent Shore during a preliminary hearing that will determine if the case will go to court-martial. He said he's filed a motion to try Shore separately from Corrales.

Corrales' attorney, Frank Spinner, previously said after reading the Army's charge sheet that he wanted to see the facts and the evidence of the case.

Waddington said, "Spc. Shore is the only one who implicates himself, the only guy who said, 'I popped off two rounds but I didn't hit the guy.' And our position is Shore didn't shoot anybody and there is no evidence that he shot this guy."

Corrales and Shore are assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, which is part of the Hawai'i-based 25th Infantry Division. The unit is attached to Multinational Division-North.

Multinational Division-North, the northern Iraq command, is headed by Maj. Gen. Benjamin R. Mixon, who also commands the 25th Infantry Division from Schofield Barracks.
