Lingle releases $535K for Kauai harbor upgrades

Advertiser Staff

Gov. Linda Lingle has released $535,000 to replace the large-capacity cesspool serving Kaua'i's Port Allen Small Boat Harbor with septic tanks and effluent disposal systems.

"The replacement of these dated cesspools with more environmentally responsible systems will prevent pollution and protect our precious ocean resources," Lingle said in a news release issued today.

The project is part of an ongoing effort between the state and the Environmental Protection Agency to eliminate large-capacity cesspools. The EPA worked out a schedule with the Department of Land and Natural Resources, setting milestone dates for particular projects. The Port Allen project has a deadline of December 2008.

Construction is scheduled to begin before the end of the year and scheduled to be completed in the summer of 2008.
