Shriners break ground on new $73 million hospital

Advertiser Staff

Shriners broke ground today on a new $73 million hospital on Punahou Street.

The hospital will be built on the 6.5-acre site of the current hospital, which was built in 1967 and last modernized in 1992. It will be completed in June 2010.

"We've continued to expand our orthapedic service to children over the years and we've outgrown our space," said Dan Orton, chairman of the Shriners Hospital board of governors. "An analysis of our current hospital showed it was more cost-effective to build a new structure instead of retrofitting what we have now."

The hospital has about 7,000 active patients from Hawai'i and the Pacific.

It was established in 1923 in Liliha, and provides care at no cost to children up to 18 years old. For more information, call 941-4466 or go to www.shriners.com.
