Kauai man gets six months in jail for animal cruelty

Advertiser Staff

LIHU'E, Kaua'i—A Kapa'a man was sentenced yesterday to six months in jail on each of 20 counts of animal cruelty, in a case in which 20 dogs were abandoned without food and water.

Three of the dogs were found dead on chains or in cages. The remaining 17 were severely malnourished, but have been rehabilitated by the Kaua'i Humane Society.

Steve Cummings, 48, had pleaded no contest to the counts. He will serve the jail terms concurrently. He was ordered to surrender custody of the dogs and was also required to make restitution of $12,150 to the Kaua'i Humane Society for their care after their rescue Dec. 6, 2006.
