PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks have signed popular outfielder Eric Byrnes to a three-year, $30 million contract extension through 2010.

Arizona called a news conference before tonight's game against Pittsburgh, and the purpose was to announce Byrnes' deal, according to a person familiar with the negotiations who requested anonymity because the announcement had not been made.

Byrnes, the ever-hustling team leader, is batting .303 with 17 home runs and 64 RBIs
