Boxing: Former champ Morel leaving prison

Associated Press

MADISON, Wis. — Former WBA flyweight champion Eric Morel will be released from prison Thursday after serving time for sexual assault, state prison officials said today.

Morel, 31, was sentenced to two years in prison and two years of extended supervision in October 2005 after he pleaded no contest to second-degree sexual assault of a drunken 15-year-old girl.

Morel, held at the Fox Lake Correctional Institution, petitioned Dane County Judge William Foust in July to allow him to serve the remainder of his sentence on extended supervision. Foust ordered him released within 30 days of Aug. 1.

Under state law, inmates who have served 75 percent to 85 percent of their sentence on lower-level felony convictions can ask a judge to modify part of their sentence, said John Dipko, a spokesman for the state Department of Corrections.

Morel will have to register as a sex offender in Wisconsin, Dipko said.

Morel won the WBA title in 2000 in Madison and successfully defended it five times before losing in 2003
