Baseball: S.F. plans celebration to honor Bonds
Associated Press
SAN FRANCISCO The city plans to mark Barry Bonds' home run record with a civic celebration, a spokesman for Mayor Gavin Newsom said today.Details about the event are still being worked out, but it will probably be held before the end of the month, according to spokesman Nathan Ballard.
Newsom, who was among the fans at At&T Park when Bonds broke Hank Aaron's 33-year-old record last night, declared today Barry Bonds Day in San Francisco. A banner with 756 on it hung from the balcony outside the mayor's City Hall office.
He planned to call the Giants slugger to congratulate him on the feat and to discuss what kind of commemoration Bonds prefers, Ballard said.
"Luckily, we have a lot of orange confetti left over from the All-Star game," he said.
