Moloka'i landfill reopens after munitions probe

The Moloka'i landfill was reopened today at 12:30 p.m. after an assessment was completed by an Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit, a county news release said. Under advice from the unit, however, the scrap metal section of the landfill will be closed to the public pending further instructions from the EOD unit.County officials said the disposing of vehicles at the landfill will not be permitted at this time. Refuse pick up service for Molokai residents are expected to occur as scheduled for Thursday and Friday, officials said.
A news release from the military said the ordnance team found scrap metal at the landfill that's similar to the more than 100 artillery shells and other items discovered at the landfill last week.
Maui County officials closed the landfill Tuesday for the second time after workers made the discovery. The landfill was closed for four days last week.
The Army's 8th Theater Sustainment Command at Fort Shafter dispatched a team from the 706th Explosive Ordnance Disposal Company from O'ahu to Moloka'i to assess the situation at the landfill.
