June livestock production down in all categories

Hawai'i livestock industry production fell across the board in June, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Milk production plunged 43 percent from June 2006 to 2.8 million pounds as one of O'ahu's two remaining dairies closed. Cumulative milk production for the first half of 2007 totaled 21.7 million pounds, down 28 percent from the same period in 2006.

Egg production totaled 6.9 million, down 16 percent from June 2006. Cumulative egg production through June fell 18 percent to 41.1 million eggs.

Total cattle marketings for June fell 30 percent from June 2006 to 4,000 head. Cumulative cattle marketings for the first six months of 2007 totaled 27,900 head,down 7 percent from the same period a year ago.

Pork production during June 2007 fell 20 percent from June 2006 to 296,000 pounds. Cumulative pork production for the first half of 2007 totaled 1.7 million pounds, down 10 percent from a year ago.
