Toyota Pops concerts begin with Three Dog Night

By Wayne Harada

The Honolulu Symphony's pops concert series has a title sponsor this season, Toyota.

So the orchestra's Honolulu Pops concerts, beginning the 10th season, will be known as the Toyota Pops, still under the baton of pops maestro Matt Catingub. For the first time, programs will be staged in three venues — Blaisdell Concert Hall, Blaisdell Arena and the Waikiki Shell.

"As we observe our 50th anniversary representing Toyota here in Hawai'i, our Toyota dealers are celebrating by promoting the music of our time: the Honolulu Symphony Pops," said Glenn K. Inouye, senior vice president of Servco, in a statement. Servco has been a longtime symphony booster in the past, via its Lexus dealership.

The pops season schedule:

  • Three Dog Night, 8 p.m. Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, and 3 p.m. Sept. 2, at Blaisdell Concert Hall. Featuring the group known for "Joy to the World," "Mama Told Me (Not to Come)" and "Black and White."
