Kaimuki-based Scout troop celebrates 90th anniversary

Advertiser Staff

Kaimuki-based Boy Scout Troop 10 will celebrate its 90th anniversary at a special dinner on Saturday at Kalani High School.

Troop 10 is the oldest continuous Boy Scout Troop in Hawai'i.

In its history, the troop has been guided by six scoutmasters: Charles S. Crane, Masao Miyamoto, Willis Yap, Gordon Wong, Peter Yee and Erik Wong.

Currently, this troop, sponsored by the Kaimuki Lion's Club, has 52 scouts ranging in age from 10 to 18. Wong is the current scoutmaster.

Throughout its history more than 150 scouts have conducted community projects to complete the requirements to attain the Eagle Scout rank, the highest rank a Boy Scout can achieve.

Projects have included building new exhibits at the Honolulu Zoo, cleaning and restoring firefighting stations on the USS Missouri, painting the scoreboard and bleachers at Mo'ili'ili Field and repairing picnic tables at Ho'omaluhia Botanical Garden.

"Guiding these young men to becoming mature adults who play a meaningful role in making the community a better place is one of the most rewarding aspects of being a scoutmaster," Wong said.

The anniversary dinner will be held at 5 p.m. at the school's cafeteria.
