Arizona Memorial project gets $500,000 from state

A project to build a new Arizona Memorial museum and visitor center has received $500,000 in state funding.

The current museum is sinking and must be replaced to prevent the loss of important and historical documents and memorabilia from World War II, according to a news release from Gov. Linda Lingle.

"The Arizona Memorial is not only a large part of Hawai'i's heritage, but also our nation's history. It honors the civilians and service members who defended our nation, as well as those who continue to serve throughout the world," Lingle said in the release. "The memorial is also an educational resource for Hawai'i residents and students and visitors who come to learn about our past. These repairs will ensure that this historic site is preserved for future generations."

Lingle allotted $500,000 in 2006 for plans, design and construction, the release said. The project's expected cost is $52 million, $41 million coming from private donations, $9 million in federal funds and $2 million from the state. Construction is scheduled to begin in December 2007 and be completed in January 2009.
