KAHUKU
Wildfire burns across farm lots

Advertiser Staff

A wildfire scorched about five acres of land behind Kahuku Hospital yesterday before firefighters extinguished it.

Crews were called out to the agriculture lots at 1:05 p.m. and the fire was out by 3:28 p.m., said fire department spokesman Capt Terry Seelig. The fire's cause was unknown.

There were no reported damages or injuries, and no threat to buildings, Seelig said. There was concern that the fire could have spread and run uphill, which would have made fighting the flames difficult, he said.

About 25 firefighters were at the scene, with three engines, a water tanker, a brush truck, a helicopter and a battalion chief.
