Ka'a'awa residents heard details last night about a $1.34 million plan to restore and stabilize Makaua Stream, which sustained severe erosion during the 40-day deluge last year.

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources, State Civil Defense and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service will share the cost of the project, officials told residents at a public information meeting at Ka'a'awa Elementary School

The work will include removal of tons of debris and construction of rock walls at three segments of the stream totaling about 350 feet. The project is scheduled to be completed in November 2008.

POWER GOES OUT IN 'AINAKOA

About 130 'Ainakoa households in East Honolulu were without electricity for about two hours last night.

A cable fault in a distribution line knocked out power at about 7 p.m., HECO spokeswoman Lynne Unemori said. Power was restored at about 9 p.m.

MOST OF MOLOKA'I LANDFILL REOPENED

The Moloka'i landfill was reopened at 12:30 p.m. yesterday after an assessment was completed by an Army explosive ordnance disposal unit, a county news release said. Under advice from the unit, however, the scrap metal section of the landfill will be closed to the public pending further instructions from the EOD unit.

County officials said the disposing of vehicles at the landfill will not be permitted at this time. Refuse pickup service for Moloka'i residents today and tomorrow will take place as scheduled, officials said.

A news release from the military said the ordnance team found scrap metal at the landfill that's similar to the more than 100 artillery shells and other items discovered at the landfill last week.

Maui County officials closed the landfill Tuesday for the second time after workers made the discovery. The landfill was closed for four days last week.

Brown-Ho may be staying somewhere in Waikiki, police said.

She is 5 feet 7, about 110 pounds, and has brown eyes and brown hair.
