Firefighters contain 100-acre Makua Valley brushfire

Advertiser Staff

Firefighters have contained a 100-acre brushfire in Makua Valley and expected that it will be fully extinguished later this afternoon.

The fire, which ignited at about 2:30 a.m. and spread northwest toward the Yokohama Bay area on O'ahu's Leeward side, posed no threat to property, said Honolulu Fire Department Capt. Terry Seelig.

No injuries were reported.

At least two dozen firefighters and two helicopters were at the scene today. In addition to dousing the flames with water drops, helicopters were used to haul firefighting gear up steep terrain, Seelig said.

Five companies are at the scene, which is about 100 yards above Farrington Highway.

The cause of the brushfire is undetermined at this time, Seelig said.
