Jim Yates, president and chief executive officer of The Gas Company, will leave the firm effective Aug. 31 to pursue a "personal career goal in Hawaii," the company announced today.

Yates also has also accepted a position to serve on The Gas Company's board of directors, the company said.

Tom Wellman, The Gas Company's current chief financial officer, will serve as the interim president and CEO until a permanent successor is found. Macquarie Infrastructure Company, The Gas Company's parent company, will conduct a search for a successor.

"We are indebted to Jim for his significant contributions and dedication to The Gas Company over the past twelve years," said Tom Wellman, Chief Financial Officer of The Gas Company. "We are saddened by his departure but grateful that we will continue to receive the benefit of Jim's business experience and ties to the community as he serves on The Gas Company's board."

Yates began working with The Gas Company in 1995 as the vice president and general manager and later became responsible for the Hawaii Energy division of Citizens Utilities Company, where he oversaw both The Gas Company and Kauai Electric. Prior to working with The Gas Company, Yates held a variety of positions in oil and gas exploration and production with BHP Petroleum, including serving as vice president of corporate development.

The Gas Company is Hawaii's premier gas energy provider and has been the state's only full-service gas energy company for more than 100 years. The Gas Company has more than 300 employees, 1,000 miles of gas lines statewide, and provides gas energy and related services to 67,000 commercial and residential customers on Oahu, the Big Island, Maui, Kaua'i, Moloka'i, and Lana'i.
