Livestock, dairy output sours

Hawai'i livestock industry production fell across the board in June, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Milk production plunged 43 percent from June 2006 to 2.8 million pounds as one of O'ahu's two remaining dairies closed. Cumulative milk production for the first half of 2007 totaled 21.7 million pounds, down 28 percent from the same period in 2006.

Egg production totaled 6.9 million, down 16 percent from June 2006. Cumulative egg production through June fell 18 percent to 41.1 million eggs.

Total cattle for June fell 30 percent from June 2006 to 4,000 head. Cumulative cattle marketings for the first six months of 2007 totaled 27,900 head, down 7 percent from the same period a year ago.

Pork production during June 2007 fell 20 percent from June 2006 to 296,000 pounds. Cumulative pork production for the first half of 2007 totaled 1.7 million pounds, down 10 percent from a year ago.


HAWAIIAN AIR NUMBERS MIXED

Hawaiian Airlines said its load factor fell slightly in July compared to the same month a year earlier, but the total number of passengers flown rose sharply.

The state's largest carrier said its planes were 87.4 percent full in July compared with 89.3 percent full in July 2006.

Hawaiian flew a total of 656,044 passengers on its interisland and trans-Pacific flights last month, up 14.8 percent from the year-earlier period.

Year-to-date, the company said it has served more than 4.1 million passengers, up 15.4 percent from the same period last year.
