Scott defeats Lambert, Metzger in AVP match

Sean Scott of Kailua and teammate Dax Holdren defeated top-seeded Mike Lambert and Stein Metzger, both Punahou graduates, at the AVP Manhattan Beach Open today in Manhattan Beach, Calif.

Scott, also a Punahou graduate, and Holdren, seeded eighth, won 21-19, 21-18 in the 53-minute third-round match. Scott and Holdren later defeated fifth-seeded Nick Lucena and Mark Williams, 25-23, 18-21, 16-14, to advance to the semifinals.

Scott and Metzger can still advance to tomorrow's finals by climbing out of the contender's bracket. After their loss, they defeated No. 11 Brent Doble and Matt Olson, 21-19, 21-17, and No. 17 Adam Jewell and Jose Loiola, 21-17, 16-5, retired.

Punahou graduate Scott Wong and partner Aaron Wachtfogel finished tied for seventh in the tournament. Finishing tied for 13th were former University of Hawai'i player Hans Stolfus and partner Ty Loomis, former UH player Jason Ring and partner Jeff Nygaard and Punahou graduate Kevin Wong and partner John Mayer.

Finishing tied for 17th was former UH player Eyal Zimet and partner Mike DiPierro. Finishing tied for 57th was former UH player Kyle Denitz and partner Casey Patterson.

Top-seeded Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh won the women's title. Finishing tied for 41st were former UH player Hedder Illustre and partner Michele Ramus and former UH-Hilo player Elena Salvador and partner Jennifer Corral. Finishing tied for 57th was former UH player Kim Willoughby and partner Jennifer Abernathy.
