Gibbons has a torn labrum, which restricts his ability to throw. He is still able to swing a bat and has been used primarily as a designated hitter. Having the surgery now will enable him to return for spring training in 2008.

The 30-year-old will be placed on the disabled list after tomorrow's game or on Monday. He is batting .230 with six homers and 28 RBIs, both career lows, in 83 games.

"Well, obviously it's frustrating, this whole year, and then to have it end like this is not fun," Gibbons said today. "Especially since I was having a lot of fun with the guys here, and we were playing pretty good ball as of late."

Gibbons said the injury occurred a few months ago when he was diving for a ball in left field. He has played in the outfield only five times since July 1.
