Baseball: Padres place Barrett on DL, option Cassel

CINCINNATI — The San Diego Padres placed catcher Michael Barrett on the 15-day disabled list and optioned pitcher Jack Cassel to Triple-A Portland today.

Pitcher Mike Thompson was recalled from Portland, and San Diego also purchased the contract of catcher Pete Laforest from Portland.

Barrett was diagnosed with concussionlike symptoms after being kneed in the head while sliding into second base yesterday. He was hit in the mask by a foul tip last Sunday against San Francisco. He is hitting .231 in 31 games with San Diego after being acquired from the Chicago Cubs.

Cassel was recalled by San Diego yesterday and made his major league debut, allowing two hits and two runs in three innings of the Padres' 12-7, 11-inning win.

Thompson was optioned to Portland on Tuesday after pitching four innings of San Diego's 10-5 loss at St. Louis on Monday. He didn't make an appearance for the minor league Beavers.

Laforest hit .313 in six games with San Diego April 12-May 3 before being outrighted to Portlan
