Beach volleyball: Punahou alum Scott falls in final

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers defeated Dax Holdren and Punahou alum Sean Scott, 20-22, 21-16, 15-11, today to win pro beach volleyball's Manhattan Beach (Calif.) Open for the second consecutive year.

Dalhausser and Rogers, seeded third, split $28,000 for the victory. Holdren and Scott, seeded eighth, split $21,000.

Dalhausser and Rogers began the season by winning five of six tournaments. But they had won just once in six previous AVP stops before claiming their seventh title today.

Their names were engraved on the Manhattan Beach pier as the first repeat champions since Karch Kiraly and Kent Steffes from 1991-93.

Leading 21-20 in the first game, Scott stuffed Rogers at the net for the winner. The second game was tied at 14 when Dalhausser and Rogers scored seven of the final nine points.

The decisive set was tied at five when Dalhausser and Rogers scored 10 of the final 16 points. The winning point came off a set by Dalhausser that Rogers dinked into an empty spot on the court in front of 5,000 fans.

Holdren and Scott, of Kailua, defeated Anthony Medel and Fred Souza, 21-18, 28-30, 15-13, in the semifinals. Dalhausser and Rogers eliminated Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal, 26-24, 21-12.

Medel and Souza eliminated Punahou alums Mike Lambert and Stein Metzger, 21-23, 21-19, 15-7, in the sixth round.

Lambert and Metzger, the tournament's top seed, split $8,500.
