Wall Street ends down after moderate gain

Associated Press

Wall Street gave up a moderate gain in late trading and closed marginally lower Monday after the Federal Reserve and other central banks added more cash to their banking systems, helping investors set aside some concerns about credit tightness. That the market gave up its gains wasn't surprising given its recent volatility, still this was one of the quieter days Wall Street has seen lately.

  • The Dow Jones industrial average fell 3.01, or 0.02 percent, to 13,236.53.

  • The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 0.72, or 0.05 percent, to 1,452.92.

  • The Nasdaq composite index fell 2.65, or 0.10 percent, to 2,542.24.

    For the year:

  • The Dow is up 773.38, or 6.21 percent.

  • The S&P is up 34.62, or 2.44 percent.

  • The Nasdaq is up 126.95, or 5.26 percent.
