Game performance will be key for former UH star Lelie

Advertiser Staff

After a light workout yesterday in preparation for today's game against Denver, San Francisco 49ers coach Mike Nolan was asked specifically about former University of Hawai'i and Broncos receiver Ashley Lelie.

Here are the questions and Nolan's answers from an article on sf49ers.com:

How has Ashley Lelie looked so far?

"I've seen him run fast, I've seen him go deep, I've seen him catch, and I've seen some special teams catches on kickoffs."

Where does he stand in the wide receiver competition?

"That's a good question. This game will have something to do with that. I'm anxious to see how he does in the game. I really am. Practice is one thing, but we'll see what he does in the game. It's against his old team, or at least two ago, anyhow. I'm kind of curious. I don't have expectations."

Will he get more playing time?

"He'll get to play."

Lelie signed a free-agent contract with the 49ers in the offseason.

He missed most of minicamps because of a leg injury and since his return, Lelie has been running with the third team.

He is listed behind Arnaz Battle, last year's leading receiver, Darnell Jackson, acquired on a draft-day trade from Seattle, Taylor Jacobs and rookie Jason Hill.

However, Jacobs has missed some practice time recently because of shin splints. Battle also has missed some time.
