All Big Island public schools to be closed tomorrow

Advertiser Staff

The Hawai'i Department of Education will close all public schools on the Big Island tomorrow as a safety precaution during the approach of Hurricane Flossie.

The closure includes all 42 regular public schools, all 12 public charter schools, and the Community School for Adults in Hilo and Kona. The closure affects about 26,000 students.

The DOE is working closely with state Civil Defense as they monitor the storm. Civil Defense officials had recommended the school closures.

Meanwhile, Kamehameha Schools announced that all classes and activities (including athletic practices and games) at its Hawai'i Island campus are canceled tomorrow due to the hurricane. A news release from the schools said a decision about resuming classes and activities will be made based on recommendations from Civil Defense and will be announced.
