John Blalock, a 12-year Kaua'i Fire Department veteran, was named today as the department's first deputy fire chief.

Kaua'i Fire Chief Robert Westerman made the announcement today in a news release.

Blalock, captain of the department's training bureau, will assume his new position Sept. 1

As deputy chief, Blalock will be responsible for the department's daily operations and management of the different bureaus including administrative, line operations, ocean safety, prevention and training.

He will also assist the fire chief with policy and procedures, development of long-range plans and coordination of services.

The deputy's position was added to the department this fiscal year to meet the demands of the island's growing population and the corresponding increase in fire department personnel.

Kaua'i Fire Department has 133 firefighters, 34 lifeguards, and eight administrative personnel.

Blalock has a bachelor's of business administration degree from the University of Hawai'i at Hilo and is a 1978 graduate of Kapa'a High School.
