U.S. Sen. Daniel K. Inouye announced today that Hawai'i and the City and County of Honolulu are eligible for federal funds to cover much of the cost of fighting the North Shore wildfire that that has been threatening the Waialua area since Sunday afternoon.

Eligibility approval granted this morning by the Federal Emergency Management Agency serves as "recognition of the severity of this blaze," Inouye said in a news release.

Under FEMA's fire management assistance program, the state, city and county will be reimbursed 75 percent of their approved expenses in fighting the brushfire, which has so far scorched more than 3,000 acres.
