Numata lifts Pearl City to World Series (ages 13-14) win

TAYLOR, Mich. — Chace Numata gave himself several birthday presents Tuesday, but none greater than a win in the Junior League World Series (13- to 14-year-olds) today.

Numata, who turned 15, had two hits and an RBI, scored a run and gave up only two runs in six innings pitched, as Pearl City defeated New Jersey, 3-2. Pearl City is 2-0 in the World Series.

"My fastball was working really well," Numata said, adding he threw mostly fastballs because he struggled to throw change-up for strikes.

"I try different pitches, and if it doesn't work, I just let it go and get ready for the next pitch," he said.

Numata struck out eight batters for Pearl City, and Sumi Pruett pitched a perfect seventh inning in relief. Pearl City plays Texas (2-0) tomorrow, the only other unbeaten United States team.
