Fundraising clothes exchange Saturday at JCCH

Hate what's in your closet? Long for something new without paying a big price?

This weekend Hawai'i will see its first "Closet Swap," a fundraising project put on by Fashionista's Market to bring people together to chat, have lunch and trade clothes. The event is scheduled for Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai'i's Mo'ili'ili Ballroom.

Closet Swap hopes to bring together fashionable women of all ages and sizes to refresh their wardrobes. By participating, women can lessen the clutter in their lives, recycle, reuse and help others in need.

Tickets are $25 pre-sale. Admission includes a bento box lunch, clothing swap, T-shirt 101 Reincarnation craft booth, cookie decorating, makeovers, beauty demonstrations, and a goodie bag for all event attendees.

How does it all work?

Bring in your gently used or new clothing, accessories, handbags, shoes that they no longer want, wear or use.

"We sort the clothing while you enjoy fun girly activities and eat lunch," says Melissa White, representing Social Wahines. "Then everyone dives in for a fun day of free clothes."

The effort will benefit the Leeward Domestic Abuse Shelter and all unclaimed items will be donated directly to the shelter. Closet Swap works on an even exchange basis: Bring 10 acceptable items, take 10 items.
