Dense smoke closes Makaha surfing beach

Advertiser Staff

Makaha surfing beach was closed as of 1 p.m. due to concerns about dense smoke, said Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city Emergency Services.

The smoke — generated by a brushfire in the Waialua area —is reportedly blowing over the top of the Wai'anae Mountain Range and settling in Makaha Valley. The fire, which has already charred more than 3,000 acres, began Sunday afternoon and has yet to be contained.
