Brushfire, Flossie threats shut 2 Oahu forest reserves

Advertiser Staff

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources today closed the Kuaokala and Mokule'ia forest reserves on the northerly tip of the Wai'anae Range and shut down the popular Peacock Flats Campground and Kealia Trail to hikers, hunters and campers.

DLNR officials are worried about the threat of a nearby brushfire that so far has burned more than 3,000 acres and because of potential wind risks from Hurricane Flossie, which is already generating wind gusts of 25 mph on O'ahu.

"There is the potential danger to hikers, hunters or campers who may be up in that area," said DLNR spokeswoman Deborah Ward. "Regarding the potential impact of Flossie on O'ahu, that's a secondary reason for closing."
