Brother charged in machete scrap

Prosecutors yesterday charged a man with attacking his brother with a machete.

Danilo Bagay Nino, 47, of Waipahu was charged with second-degree assault. His bail is $15,000.

The complainant, 41, told police Nino swung a machete at him for no apparent reason during a family party in Waipahu Saturday night. The victim was treated for minor cuts to his hand.



KAUA'I NAMES 1ST DEPUTY FIRE CHIEF

John Blalock, a 12-year Kaua'i Fire Department veteran, yesterday was named the department's first deputy fire chief.

Kaua'i Fire Chief Robert Westerman made the announcement today in a news release.

Blalock, captain of the department's training bureau, will assume his new position Sept. 1.

As deputy chief, Blalock will be responsible for the department's daily operations and management of the different bureaus including administrative, line operations, ocean safety, prevention and training.

He will also assist the fire chief with policy and procedures, development of long-range plans and coordination of services.

The deputy's position was added to the department this fiscal year to meet the demands of the island's growing population and the corresponding increase in Fire Department personnel.

The Kaua'i Fire Department has 133 firefighters, 34 lifeguards and eight administrative personnel.



MAN FREED IN STABBING PROBE

A 25-year-old Makiki man arrested Sunday for questioning about an early morning stabbing outside a Kaka'ako nightclub was released yesterday pending further investigation. An attempted-murder probe is ongoing.

The victim, 21, was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition. A witness told police the man was mobbed and stabbed twice in the chest.



KAIMUKI LIBRARY BOOK SALE SEPT. 1

Kaimuki Public Library is planning its Big September Book Sale for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 1, in the downstairs parking lot.

Each book will be sold for $1, with plenty of audio books, CDs, DVDs, videos and cassettes also available. Proceeds will benefit the library's equipment fund.
