Waianae football game moved because of Waialua fire

Advertiser Staff

The high-school football game between Farrington at Wai'anae has been moved from Friday to Saturday because of smoke related to the brushfire in Waialua.

The game will be played at Wai'anae's Raymond Torii Stadium. The junior varsity game will start at the usual Saturday starting time of 4 p.m. with the varsity to follow about 25 minutes after the end of the JV game.

Wai'anae athletic director Glenn Tokunaga said school officials decided this morning on the change. Students were released early yesterday because of smoke problems from the fire that is on the Waialua side of the Wai'anae mountain range. Because school was closed, practice was canceled. The school remained closed today, but Wai'anae officials got approval from its district office to allow the football team to hold practice later today because the air has cleared, Tokunaga said.

Ironically, the smoke has not been a problem at Waialua High, where athletic teams have been able to practice, athletic director Sharon Yoshimura said.

Also, Friday's varsity game between Damien at Kapolei is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and will be telecast on OC16.
