The Waialua brushfire, which has burned out of control for the past four days, has charred about 6,700 acres as of this morning."Right now, were estimating that the fire is about 25 percent contained," said Honolulu Fire Department Capt. Terry Seelig.
Today's firefighting approach will involve a coordinated effort among the Fire Department, the military and the state Department of Land and Natural Resources, Seelig said.
In addition, five helicopters will continue dropping water on the fire.
Two of the helicopters are military, two are privately owned helicopters that are under charter to the state and one belongs to the fire Department, Seelig said.
Winds have made the fire difficult to fight as it has expanded into upper Waialua.
Overnight, pockets of flames could be seen up in the mountains just as they had the night before.
As many as 130 firefighters, five helicopters and 27 companies have battled against the fire and continue to fight it this morning.
No residents have been evacuated overnight, but the fire continues to be a threat this morning.
Residents said they had hoped rain from Flossie would help fight the flames, but firefighters received little help from the tropical storm overnight.
