Hawaii ag officials get $50,000 food safety grant

Advertiser Staff

The federal goverment has awarded a $50,000 grant to the state Department of Agriculture to help fund a food safety program that wil use radio-frequency identification devices to better track produce from the farm to the consumer.

The cost of the program is estimated to be $1.6 million over three years.

The electronic tags, which would be placed in food boxes and pallets, will allow officials to trace food products back to the source in rare instances when food needs to be recalled.
