Aloha Festivals sets falsetto contest for Sept. 28

Advertiser Staff

The 13th annual Aloha Festivals Falsetto Contest is set for 7 p.m. Sept. 28 at the Sheraton Waikiki hotel's Kauai and Maui ballrooms. Doors open at 6 p.m.

Falsetto is the Hawaiian style of singing, with roots dating back to the 1800s, where male voices soar in the upper registers of the musical scale, with a distinctive element called "hai," or break in the voice. Its heritage links back to pre-European Hawaiian chanting, early missionary hymns and 19th century European music, with later influences from the Spanish-Indian vaqueros who came to the Islands in the 1830s.

Harry B. Soria Jr., the veteran radio and online Hawaiian music host, will co-emcee with Karen Keawehawaii, the Island entertainer.

Holunape, a musical trio which won two Na Hoku Hanohano Awards in 2006, will provide entertainment and the event also will name inductees into the Falsetto Hall of Fame.

Tickets$25, available in advance through Aloha Festivals' website, alohafestivals.com.

After Sept. 21, tickets will be available through Sheraton's central dining desk, 921-4600.
