Wahine amateur surf contest at Kewalo Bowls Saturday

Advertiser Staff

The second annual Girls Who Surf Amateur Wahine Surf Contest takes place 8 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. Saturdayt (registration is at 7 a.m.) at Kewalo Bowls. The contest is accepting registrations online now, and on the beach ($35) — to encourage participation.

There will be 19 heats of surfers competing in short, longboard and bodyboar categories. So far entrants range in age from 4 to 49 and come from throughout the state and the Mainland. The goal of Girls Who Surf, which also offers lessons, is to get females out in the water. Founder Cherry Fu learned to surf after moving to Hawai'i in 2002 and she wants to share that experience with other women.
