Wind kicks up at Waialua brushfire; HFD responds

By David Waite
Advertiser Staff Writer

The fire department had to ramp up efforts at the Waialua wildfire this afternoon after the wind picked up, Capt. Frank Johnson said.

The additional wind, combined with inaccessible sites, led to more hot spots, he said.

Another truck and three more helicopters were added, bringing the total on site to five helicopters, four engines and two tankers.

The department expects to spend another night

in Waialua, Johnson said.

The brushfire was deemed 80 percent contained as of 8 this morning and that remained the same this afternoon, said Johnson.

The fire, which has blackened more than 6,700 acres since it broke out Sunday afternoon, is not advancing in any direction this morning, Johnson said.

"We've got the department's two helicopters as well as three engine companies and two tankers on the ground this morning concentrating on flareups and hot spots," Johnson said. About 20 firefighters are at the scene.

The fire's perimeter is stable at this time, Johnson said.

Although there was no substantial rain during the night, light winds helped firefighters gain the upper hand in battling the blaze, Johnson said.

The Waialua fire is the biggest of the year so far on O'ahu. No structures have been destroyed or damaged by the blaze and no injuries have been reported.
