Hawaii signs JUCO forward

The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team gained one player and lost another yesterday.

Bill Amis, a forward from Pratt Community College (Kan.), signed a scholarship agreement yesterday to play for the Rainbow Warriors.

Meanwhile, head coach Bob Nash announced that reserve center Todd Follmer will not return this season. The 7-footer averaged 1.6 points and 0.7 rebounds per game in limited action as a sophomore last season.

Amis, who is listed at 6 feet 8 and 210 pounds, will be eligible as a sophomore for the upcoming 2007-08 season. He averaged 7.4 points and 4.6 rebounds per game as a freshman at Pratt last season.

He led the team with a field-goal shooting percentage of .531, and was second in free-throw percentage at .756.

"Bill attended a camp this summer for the top junior college players and he stood out among the best," Nash said. "He has great upside, having grown from 6-6 in high school to almost 6-9. He's an athletic forward with multiple skills, a good ball handler and shoots well in transition."

Amis is originally from Oklahoma City and he helped lead Putnam City High to a state championship as a senior in 2006. UH senior guard Matt Gibson is a 2003 graduate of Putnam City.

Amis is the fifth new recruit to join the 'Bows as a scholarship player for the 2007-08 season. The others are: Paul Campbell, a 6-10 power forward; Conrad Fitzgerald, a 6-4 wing player; Adhar Mayen, a 6-7 small forward, and Kareem Nitoto, a 6-3 point guard.

Among the new recruits, Amis, Campbell and Mayen are sophomores, and Fitzgerald and Nitoto are freshmen.
