Tennis: Serena Williams withdraws from Pilot Pen

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Serena Williams withdrew from the Pilot Pen tournament because of a thumb injury that has sidelined her since Wimbledon.

Williams would have made her first appearance at the Pilot Pen, tournament officials said today. Play starts Sunday.

Williams, an eight-time Grand Slam champion and former No. 1 player, is ranked eighth on the WTA Tour.

She was hampered by injuries in 2006 before entering the Australian Open as an unseeded player and winning the title in January
