Hilo loses in semifinals of Senior League World Series

Jose Rogelio Gonzalez doubled home the go-ahead run then pitched a perfect ninth inning today to lead Paraguana of Falcon, Venezuela, to a 5-4 victory over Hilo in the semifinals of the Senior League World Series in Bangor, Maine.

Paraguana faces the winner of the other semifinal between Georgia and East Texas in the championship game tomorrow.

Hilo, which finished 4-1 in the tournament for 14- to 16-year-olds, rallied for two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning after Paraguana scored two in the top of the inning to tie the score at 4.

In the top of the ninth, Marcos Pina reached on a fielder's choice then scored on Gonzalez's two-out double. Gonzalez was tagged out trying to take third.

Gonzalez pitched 3 1/3 innings in relief, allowing two runs and four hits, striking out four and walking one.

Hilo was led by Blake Amaral who went 3 for 4, including an RBI single in the first and a solo home run in the third that gave Hilo a 2-0 lead.

Paraguana scored two runs in the fifth inning to tie it at 2.
