Woe Canada, Wie misses cut by 4 at Canadian Open

Advertiser Staff

Honolulu's Michelle Wie missed the cut by four strokes at the Canadian Women's open today. She shot a 3-over-par 74 today for a two-round total of 7-over 149.

Wie, 17, tied for 115th place in the 156-player field at the par-71 Royal Mayfair Golf & Country Club in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. She finished 15 strokes behind leaders Juli Inkster (66) and Shi Hyun Ahn (67), who lead at 8-under 134.

The top 70 players and ties advance to play on the weekend. The cut was made at 145.

"I missed a couple of crucial putts here and there and a couple of shots didn't go the way I wanted to," Wie said. "It's frustrating to see my score was high when I don't feel I played that bad.

Wie, a Punahou graduate who will attend Stanford in the fall, had two birdies (par-5 10th and par-4 18th) and five bogeys in a 38-36 round. She shot 4-over 75 in her first round yesterday.

Wie, recovering from wrist injuries, has either withdrawn or missed the cut in four of the past six women's tournaments this year. And in the two LPGA events in which she did make the midway cut, Wie finished at the bottom.

Her scorecard this year (events are LPGA unless noted):

  • Sony Open in Hawai'i (January, PGA Tour), missed cut.

  • Ginn Tribute (May), withdrew after shooting 14-over through 16 holes.

  • LPGA Championship (June), made cut, finished last by 10 shots.

  • U.S. Women's Open (June), withdrew in second round after shooting 11-over in the first round and 6-over through nine holes in the second.

  • Evian Masters in France (July), made cut, records first under-par round after 23 consecutive rounds of par or worse, but finishes second-to-last.

  • Women's British Open (August), missed cut.

  • Canadian Open (August), missed cut.
