Six-day, 6,700-acre Waialua blaze now 90% contained

Advertiser Staff

A Waialua fire that has been burning since Sunday is now 90 percent contained and crews are continuing to cool down hot spots with helicopter airdrops, said Capt. Frank Johnson, Honolulu Fire Department spokesman.

Two helicopters and about 20 firefighters remain on duty at the site where 6,700 acres of mostly scrub brush and dried grass have burned.

No injuries or damage to structures have been reported.

Calmer winds are helping prevent the spread of the fire but the breeze is expected to pick up in the afternoon, Johnson said.
