Celebrating Roger Long at theater

A celebration of life for Roger Long, a longtime director, actor and theater professor at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa, will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday at Kennedy Theatre.

Long died April 30 at age 68, after a long illness. He was a former associate dean of the College of Arts and Humanities and emeritus professor of Asian theater at UH.

Long had a lifelong passion for Indonesian wayang kulit (Javanese shadow puppetry), produced rarely performed Indonesian and Balinese dramas at Kennedy Theatre, and earned Po'okela Awards for his direction of such American dramas as "Wit" and "Angels in America, Part I" at Manoa Valley Theatre.

Friends will gather to share their memories of Long — the joyous, the irreverent, the creative and occasionally the serious.
